Safety & Quality Assurance

Safety

Nothing we do at Tidewater is more important than the safety of our employee's and the public, and the integrity of the products we haul. Our DOT accident rating is one of the lowest in the trucking industry. Our trucks are limited to a top speed of 68 mph and all are equipped with anti-lock brakes. Drivers receive a quarterly safety bonus for having no accidents or moving violations of any kind. Our Safety Department is proactive and innovative with its awareness training, and monitors driver behavior over our satellite tracking system. Tidewater is one of only a few tank truck companies to proudly display an 800 number on the back of our vehicles to solicit comments from the general public. All of us have families sharing the road with our trucks, so we are committed to operating in a safe manner all of the time.

Responsible Care Policy

Tidewater is committed to the safe transportation of dry and liquid bulk products. We protect the environment by abiding with legal and other requirements including Responsible Care. We are also committed to the safety, security, and health needs of all stakeholders. Tidewater will use the established Responsible Care Management System for continual improvement by applying the measurement system, within the Management System, and gathering employee input, public comments, and customer feedback.

The SECONDS “process”

is for all Tidewater employees! The SECONDS “process” stresses that decisions are made literally in second(s), and those decisions have a consequence, good or bad. The objective is to make the right decision in a second, and avoid saying, “I wish I could do that over”.

The Safety process system of: SAFETY ENSURES CONTINUOUS OPPORTUNITIES (for) NEW DRIVING SUCCESS ("SECONDS") is one of our in-house training programs.

The SECONDS “process” can also be modified from DRIVING SUCCESS to DAILY SUCCESS. This allows the system to be used in all aspects of the company. Tidewater uses the SECONDS process in the Accident Prevention Process and in our Quality process. When Tidewater has a Safety/Quality incident, we video the employee involved in the incident/accident. The employee gives an account of how they would have changed the second(s) prior to their incident! We learn how changing those “seconds” would have made a difference in avoiding an accident. Tidewater uses the videos to train other drivers on accident prevention. TWT stresses to “Make all seconds count”! This SECONDS process is also used in an eight hour training session for the shop personnel. They are trained on all OSHA topics and other shop safety issues.

Quality Program

Tidewater knows that anyone can say they are a tank truck company but when it comes to providing service, a 99% on time error free delivery track record is hard to top. We track every shipment: over 65,190 in 2005; over 58,128 in 2006; and over 67,570 in 2007; and over 73,059 in 2008 - we also track every non-conformance. Our quality system tracks delivery performance, and includes maintenance tasks, tank cleaning and dispatch audits on a quarterly basis. Our Quality Manager investigates the root causes and trends of our non-conformances and audit findings. These are then reviewed and addressed in our quarterly management meetings. We are a Responsible Care Partner Company and participate in the regional meetings sponsored by the American Chemistry Council.
